Should we be taking our eCigarettes on holiday?

eCigarettes have become very popular in recent months, and more and more people are taking the devices on holiday with them, and why not. Relaxing on the beach vaping away the sunshine! Sounds great. But they can be dangerous if you buy counterfeit and poor quality products from untrustworthy shops and do not look after them.

Most eCigarettes, including Vvapours range, have safety cut off timers so when you push the power button and hold it on, the power cuts off after a few seconds. Vvapour buy from highly rated, reputable firms. But not all eCigs are manufactured this way and you really need to be careful which eCig vendor you choose to buy from.

An airline passenger found this out the hard way. Earlier this month, after checking her bag at Logan International Airport in Boston, officials noticed a hole appearing in the luggage while they were handling the bag on the plane!

On Saturday, August 9, passengers were removed and cleared from a JetBlue flight to Buffalo, New York. The burning luggage was taken from the plane and the fire extinguished. You can just imagine what might of happened if the official never saw the luggage smouldering. Ed Freni, director of aviation with the Massachusetts Port Authority, stated “The smouldering bag was removed from the plane and put out with a fire extinguisher. But if the flight had actually taken off, things could have been very different”.

An investigation is still ongoing as fire officials are “not 100% certain an eCigarette was to blame, but it does look likely”. eCigarettes deliver nicotine and flavour by vapourising eLiquid with a powered re-chargeable lithium-ion battery. Any device with a lithium-ion battery can potentially be dangerous (be it eCigarette, phone, tablet, ect) but devices with a lithium-ion battery and a heating element also, pose a slightly greater risk (portable hair straighteners, eCigarettes, etc). For years lithion-ion batteries have been linked to other fires, some on other planes, so we all need to be careful and vigilant with ALL our household, everyday devices.

What Can We Do To Improve Safety in the Home and Travelling?

There are steps you can take to improve safety of your eCigarettes, and all the other battery powered devices you have in your home.

When taking your eCigarette on a long journey or abroad try to keep it with you. Hand luggage, in your pocket, or in the front of the car with you and not in the bottom of your boot underneath everything.

While in transport and not in use, if you can remove the battery do so. If there is no power there is no danger. Also without an atomizer connected the battery cannot make a connection, so removing vape tanks for transport can also help.

Always Travelling? Buy a hard case, or Tupperware container, that fits your eCig or other rechargeable device. Power buttons and switches cannot be accidentally pushed down by other cargo if they have a strong, hard case surrounding and protecting them.

It is usually advisable to never use a device while its charging via the mains power outlet. If you plug your phone on charge, then start using it as you usually would, you probably notice the phone getting hotter than it usually does in your hand. This is especially bad under prolonged use while on charge or playing a HD game while charging. eCigarettes are no different. Try to use your eCigarettes when they are not on charge.

Charging bags are also available to help again with charging safety. These are made from fire proof material and suffocate any flames that might be caused by a poor quality lithium-ion battery. These bags can be bought to fit your phone, tablet or even laptop.

Keeping your device clean, and keeping it away from dangers such as radiators and fires, should also go a long way into improving your devices safety and longevity.
